Mark Van Ziegler's varied influences have given him opportunities to perform in a wide range of music while maintaining an energetic and humble approach to the bass. He has the ability to span the spectrum of modern music ? from original jazz and free improvisation; to contemporary solo and chamber classical music; to traditional and jazz influenced Brazilian and Afro-Cuban music ? consistently enhancing the music with his original voice. After studies with Tom Knific and graduating with honors from Western Michigan University he went on to study with renowned bassist improviser and composer Michael Formanek at the Peabody Conservatory. Upon completing graduate studies in 2005 he became the first-ever jazz major to receive the prestigious Olga von Hartz Owens Memorial Prize for Strings.
