Johnny Vogelsang studied at the Sheppard School of Music at Rice University 1988-1992 and subsequently moved to Austin during the summer of 1992. His professional career began here as founder and co-leader of a popular funk group known as The Gingbreadmen. This group gained national acclaim and toured the country sharing stages with many legendary performers such as Maceo Parker Tower of Power Medeski Martin & Wood Fishbone and 311. Johnny also formed jazz group Concerto Grosso who performed in many local jazz venues including the Elephant Room and the Clarksville Jazz Fest.
In 1998 Johnny became a member of legendary Austin group Soulhat and performed toured and recorded with them for several years. In 2003 Johnny began playing with well-known Austin musician Bob Schneider performing on tour with him in many venues across the United States and Canada including a 2006 tour opening for the Dixie Chicks.
Currently Johnny remains a top-notch session musician in Austin. In 2009 he played at the Austin Music Awards receiving Second Place for Best Bass Player while the group he works with regularly Suzanna Choffel received the award for Best Indie Artist. He has performed recorded produced and/or written songs with many diverse artists and groups including Suzanna Choffel Billy Harvey The Scabs Dan Dyer Ainjel Emme Nakia and His Southern Cousins Sheboygan Darin Murphy Chip Taylor and Carrie Rodriguez Leo Nocentelli the 8 1?2 Souveniers Victrola Paris 49 Glover Gil Tony Scalzo and Seahorse just to name a few.
Johnny loves to teach and is proficient on several instruments including double bass electric bass guitar voice drums piano music theory and composition.
