Hello there, thanks for reading. My name is Charles. I'm 50% voice teacher and 50% medical professional. This means I'm 100% into the actual, factual, biological, linguistic, psychoacoustic science of the voice and how I can put it to work for you and your unique vocal goals (and the new additional ones we may come up with together).
Well first thing's first, my cold hard stats. I have a 6 Octave range that optimally expands up from F1 in strohbass to F7 in flageolet ("Mariah Carey whistle"). I have a belting range from D#4 to D#6 including the mix voice extension starting at E5. I have a Bachelor's in Biology and Linguistics from Swarthmore College where I did my thesis on the sociolinguistic phenomenon of typing anatomical features of the singing voice into different genres (in other words, attempting to explain things like what makes Tom Waits seen as a Blues singer). I am a literate keyboardist who can still play by ear, but my forte (no pun intended) is voice. Recently, I have started attending modules in Speech Pathology as it relates to nearly gagged on a camera! #ForScience!
I have been tutoring voice since 2010 and teaching in a studio since 2014. I currently perform with a belly dance band and an experimental modern jazz ensemble. Past acts have included pop, acoustic and electronica. I have taught Pop, RnB, Soul, Jazz, Metal/Grunge, Rock, Classical, Carnatic and undecided singers and continue to do so. I sing more genres than I have currently taught, and I hope students like you might one day help me change that.
Whew, on that note (no pun intended), enough about me. How about what I can do for you? Being an objective vocal scientist means I have no affinity for genres when I teach. I won't force you to do opera or musical theater or tell you screaming or growling is unhealthy. In fact, screaming or growling, when done right, have been invaluable aides to warming my voice up.
I will use the most of my arsenal of research in the vocal schools of Bel Canto, Legit, Jo Estill, Donna Sotto-Morettini and modern emerging vocal research by other voice scientists such as Lisa Popeil and Johan Sundberg, *deep breath*, to increase the arsenal of vocal tools and tricks you have at your disposal to realize the ideal voice you deserve. My curriculum is individualized to every student, which means we will work as a team to discover and address vocal concerns as you see fit.
Well, thank you for reading all this but as my curricula are as customized and diverse as my students, I need to hear more about you before I keep making this pitch (again, no pun intended). I can't wait to hear from you! No really, I would literally love to HEAR from you, especially because I offer FREE vocal diagnostics and consultations with no commitment. How can I help YOU?
Charles
