My Teaching Approach

I teach the foundational concepts needed to benefit the most from playing the drums, whatever your goals might be.

I emphasize a lingual approach to playing the drums. Rather than teaching specific beats and licks to regurgitate, I help lay a rhythmic and technical foundation that will enable you to play whatever you hear, efficiently. That way, your taste and personality will inform your drumming, rather than the technical hurdles of playing the drums.

Learning a relaxed technique is extremely important to provide a solid foundation for self-expression and to prevent potential injuries later on. I also expose students to many different styles of music, because diversity makes students’ playing more creative and opens their mind to other cultures and musical traditions.

I base my lessons around recordings of mine and the student’s choosing as well as exercises tailored to the student’s strengths and weaknesses. Once we’ve achieved an initial foundation at the instrument, we’ll also study chart reading.

While I have many years of experience teaching and playing professionally, I can only do so much. The most important things a student can do to ensure success are to practice consistently and to have fun.
