"When you listen to music, multiple areas of your brain become engaged and active. But when you actually play an instrument, that activity becomes more like a full-body brain workout. What's going on? Anita Collins explains the fireworks that go off in musicians' brains when they play, and examines some of the long-term positive effects of this mental workout. "

Studies show that playing an instrument benefits us in multiple ways; not only does it increase the ability of the brain to integrate information from different sources and therefore concentrate on multiple tasks at once, but also the process strengthens our memory and reading skills, as well as the ability to adapt. Music also increases blood flow in the brain and leads to brain plasticity later on. This wonderful video from Anita Collins explains many of the benefits we gain in the process of learning music.
