Soprano Sydney Mancasola - Winner of 2013 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions
Against all negative advice, a star is born

MET competition winners from Philadelphia include Soprano Sydney Mancasola (AVA), bass-baritone Musa Ngqungwana (AVA) and bass-baritone Brandon Cedel (Curtis). I work with all three artists, so yes, a proud moment. It was fun to hear them on the MET stage.

Against all negative advice, a star is born. I want to share Sydney Mancasola's own profound words to her fans about her MET win. Be inspired.

Today I won a competition. I am smart enough to know it is just a contest, but I would like to say this: I've been told in the past year the following: "you're trying too hard", "pushing too much," "not singing enough," "singing too much," "you're not musical," "you're a 2 out of 10," "your voice isn't special...but at least you're consistent," "you're singing all the wrong rep,"...the list goes on.... Sound familiar? I think most young singers get hit with a barrage of negativity at some point, and I just want to say for myself that I am glad I didn't listen too hard or I might have stopped believing in myself. My teacher Daune Mahy once told me to never let anything anyone else said define me. This might have been the best advice I've ever gotten.
